History of Oakridge, Vancouver
Although other neighbourhoods like Marpole and Kerrisdale grew in the early 1900s, Oakridge did not experience such growth until the early 1950s, when the CPR developed the area.
The railway company built single-family homes and the established Vancouver’s first shopping centre, Oakridge Centre, a 32-acre area at 41st and Cambie.
During the 1960s, a large number of young families moved into the Oakridge community. The city built schools and hospitals, and soon facilities such as the Jewish Community Centre and the Home for the Aged were established to serve the residents.
