Are you thinking of moving to Vancouver?

Sunset, located in the south-east quadrant of Vancouver, is probably the most ethnically diverse neighbourhood in the city. It is near the multicultural Fraser Street district, with the Marpole and Oakridge neighbourhoods to the west, and the Victoria-Fraserview neighbourhood to the east.

History of Sunset, Vancouver

The Sunset neighbourhood sprung up in the 1860s. At the time, the area was part of South Vancouver and was primarily farmland and a few homes. In the late 19th and early 20th century, the area was logged, leading to rapid industrialization.

In 1929, the District of South Vancouver amalgamated with the City of Vancouver, incorporating Sunset as a part of the city. The cimmunity remained rural until central and eastern European immigrants settled in the 1940s, followed by another wave—primarily Sikhs from the Punjab region of South Asia—in the 1960s. These new immigrants founded the Punjabi Market (Little India) on Main Street and developed the final neighbourhood. The architectural style of residential houses built in this area between the 1960s and the 1980s is known as Vancouver Specials. Most development in Sunset ceased in the 1980s, but many of these homes still stand across southeast Vancouver.
